I’m Vipul. I spend my working hours building machine learning platforms, and a good share of the rest wondering how we come to know anything at all.
I’m drawn to epistemology, theoretical and quantum physics, and the question of what learning really is, for people and for machines. Karl Popper and David Deutsch shaped how I think: knowledge grows through bold conjectures and honest attempts to refute them, and good explanations are hard to vary. I try to hold my own ideas to that standard. When I can, I build a small experiment and let reality argue back.
What I write about
- Epistemology and the growth of knowledge. How explanations are created, tested, and replaced, and what that means for science, engineering, and AI.
- Theoretical and quantum physics. The fabric of reality, information as something physical, and the parts of physics that still feel like philosophy.
- AI and machine learning. What models actually represent, what training really changes, and whether anything like understanding can emerge from computation.
- Running. Long, slow miles on trails, and the clarity that shows up somewhere past the point where the legs want to stop.
Away from the keyboard you’ll usually find me in the woods, trying to leave the trail better than I found it, or somewhere quiet with a paperback. I like the smell of paper more than I can justify.
These essays are where I think out loud. Some will be rigorous, some speculative, and I’ll try to be clear about which is which. Criticism is welcome; it’s how ideas get better.
